The Alaska Permanent Fund List is a unique feature of our Alaska lists. The majority of the income that the State of Alaska receives from oil production (mostly at the giant Prudhoe Bay field on Alaska's "North Slope") has been placed in a permanent savings account for future generations. The goals of the permanent fund are many, including the eventual funding of state services when the oil eventually runs out. The principal of the permanent fund now amounts to more than $20 Billion, and gains more each year. In the last few years, earned interest on investments has accounted for more revenue than the income from oil production taxes.

The annual dividend varies from year to year, the amount being announced each year a few weeks before the checks are sent out.
